Ivan Berggren

Ivan and Elisabet have been dancing together for over 13 years and are among the best Lindy Hop couples in Sweden. Their long and successful competition career included winning major competitions in Sweden and the U.K., as well as the Lindy Hop Division of the 1996 American Swing Dance Championship. Ivan and Elisabet are known for their fast footwork and superb aerials. They have taught all over Sweden, in England and the U.S. Along with their partners Tony and Aurelie, they sponsor the annual Beantown Lindy Hop Camp held at Wheaton College in Massachusetts. Ivan and Elisabet are looking forward to returning to New England and seeing many of their Beantown friends!

Fatou-Carol grew up dancing and studying various forms of dance. She began professionally teaching, performing and choreographing in the 1970s and co-founded the Art of Black Dance and Music in 1975. Her enthusiasm for her work with African-rooted dance forms led her to spend 3 1/2 years studying and performing in West Africa. Since that time, Fatou-Carol has continued for the past two decades to teach at public schools, colleges and universities, as well as at the Dance Complex, and has performed with several companies, including a few of her own. She continues as artistic director of Under the Sun Dance and Drum, funded under the MA Cultural Council's Events and Residency Programs.

Jafar has spent most of his life around some form of music, performing and studying many types of percussion and styles for the last 25 years. He has performed with numerous companies since the 1970s, including Art of Black Dance and Music and Unity Dance Co.

Lindy Hop originated out of the African-American culture, which had its roots in West Africa. You may even recognize some similarities to steps you already know. This will be a fantastic workshop for body movement and isolations. Also includes working on body strength, stretch and stamina. The class will be taught by Fatou-Carol Sylla and accompanied by live drumming with Jafar Manselle. This is a non-partner class, no experience needed.
B 2:15-3:30pm Lindy Hop Fundamentals
(no experience or partner needed)
Starting at the beginning. No experience needed, but also a great opportunity for experienced dancers to refine basics.
C 3:45-5:00pm Building on Fundamentals
(follows on from B)
Going beyond the basics, emphasizing style and technique.
D 5:15-6:15pm Big Apple
(non-partner, all levels)
This fun non-partner dance was traditionally danced in a circle with someone calling steps. In this class a routine of authentic jazz steps will be taught. Good for working on body movement and rhythm. Many of the steps learned can also be incorporated into social dancing. No experience needed.
