  • Soul Competition

Racky Thomas is primarily a Blues man, although he continues to add to his repertoire, which has grown to be quite eclectic! He has a talent for blending his musicians on different occasions to come up with just the right mix for his audience. Racky loves playing for dancers and is great at keeping a Swing groove to everything played. There is plenty of inspiration for swinging out! His delivery has always been “soulful” and for this dance he’ll be reaching into his bag of tricks to add some classic Soul selections. Racky connects with his audience and his energy is infectious. His fan base keeps growing as it is always a fun night when Racky is on board!

Guest DJ Javier Johnson will be playing some get-up-and-dance Soul music during the band breaks as well as teaching the lesson at the start of the dance. Javi is the founding member of what is now the Hartford Underground, a Swing dance organization based in Hartford, as well as Hart & Soul, an annual dance weekend event held in September. In addition, he teaches both locally and internationally, and besides Swing, specializes in Balboa and Soul. He has a smooth, joyful, rhythmical style which is always a standout on the dance floor.

Special lesson Intro to Partnered Soul to start the evening. This class will get you grooving with the music and your partner. You’ll learn the basics of how to connect your dancing to the soul of the music. Open to all and included with admission.

Grab a partner and participate in the Soul Competition! No advanced registration and no added fee to enter. This will be a fun competition open to anyone who would like to participate. There will be prizes!

Hop to the Beat 20th Anniversary Celebration

It was 20 years ago in September when Hop to the Beat was established and offered Lindy Hop classes in Newton. Shortly after, small practices were started which eventually grew into a monthly Swing dance. Venues came and went and a few years ago we found ourselves at the beautiful KI in Brookline where Uptown Swing is now held. Classes branched out to our Boston location to be more accessible for those who live closer to our dance. Many weekend workshops were offered bringing in an incredible list of the best instructors from around the world. Beantown Camp was started in 1997 at a time when there were few opportunities that brought together dancers from different areas. We rode through the ups and downs over the years to have the biggest and most wonderful Beantown ever this year.

It has been an incredible journey and so much has happened that we never could have envisioned back when we first started. We have had some very amazing opportunities over the years, one that even took us to Taiwan and Hong Kong to perform with the Artie Shaw Orchestra. Many people have come and gone, although there is still a good representation from the early days. Many friendships, a huge number of students, memorable moments, as well as our share of frustrations, challenges and a ton of work!

HTTB was started for one reason, which was to spread our love of Lindy Hop. It is still why it exists today. Please join us as we celebrate 20 years of joy, passion and Lindy love!

Their leader Gordon Au, called “comfortable in any idiom and fearless” by music writer Michael Steinman, is known in the Lindy scene for his fiery and rhythmic trumpet playing, found at the forefront of bands led by Jonathan Stout, Glenn Crytzer, Gordon Webster, Vince Giordano, Baby Soda and others.

Purchase a weekend pass to BTP and you also receive free admission to Uptown Swing! That’s two dances for the price of one on Saturday night. All you have to do is show your wristband, sign in, and dance to the fabulous Fried Bananas! In addition, BTP is offering all Uptown Swing attendees who are not attending the weekend to come to the Saturday late night for $20. Uptown Swing is excited to welcome Shawn Hershey, Josh Fialkoff & The Fried Bananas to our March dance! Shawn first created the Fried Bananas back in his Boston days and we had some great nights dancing to them. Josh also played for us with his own previous band. Now these two have teamed up with a whole new group. They played at the last Montréal DanceFest and had the place swingin’ hard and we’ve been trying ever since to get them back to Boston!
