September marks a new season of dances and the 22nd anniversary of Hop to the Beat!

Uptown Swing welcomes back the always fabulous Professor Cunningham and His Old School, performing the most swinging repertoire in the New Orleans tradition — from Sidney Bechet, to Fats Waller, to Professor Longhair and even Fats Domino! The band was formed in 2012 by our favorite Aussie bandleader and reedman, the charming and witty Adrian Cunningham, and consists of some of the most energetic and accomplished musicians on the New York scene. It’s been a regular hit, performing at some of the city’s finest speakeasy shows (Shanghai Mermaid, Gemini and Scorpio, NY Hot Jazz Festival) and regularly performing to packed houses at some of the city’s best Swing venues (Cutting Room, Swing 46, The Back Room).

Guest DJ Natalie Eringros will be featured during the band breaks.

Admission: $20 ($16 with Student ID)

Uptown Swing Celebrates Frankie Manning!

Uptown Swing Celebrates Frankie Manning!

May is Frankie Month and Lindy Hoppers worldwide will be celebrating this very special man. There isn’t a better example than Frankie Manning to remind us of the joy and fun we have dancing! If you don’t know much about him, be sure to check out his bio. Of course the night would not be complete without a Shim Sham, Frankie style!

Proceeds from this dance will be contributed to the Beantown Scholarship Program.

The Frankie Manning Foundation was established with Frankie’s passing to carry on his legacy. We’ve been honored to have Beantown Camp as part of the Ambassador Program, which provides scholarships to support the growth and development of new ambassadors of Lindy Hop. Recipients are primarily selected from African-American communities throughout the USA as well as areas around the world where Lindy Hop is in a very early stage of development.

The experience is often life-changing, and it is wonderful to watch them grow as individuals and dancers and begin to help teach future generations. Starting in 2014, Beantown began collecting funds to help bring past ambassadors back to camp as many do not have the means to do so on their own. There is no charge to attend camp, however funds are needed to cover housing, meals and travel.

Music this month will be provided by guest DJs Kevin Lin, Katie Piselli and Stan Yen! We’ll be dancing to Frankie’s favorites as well as music from the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem. This means Count Basie, Chick Webb, Lionel Hampton, Duke Ellington, Erskine Hawkins, and more. You know it will be swingin’!

The dance lesson is at 8:30pm and social dancing at 9:15pm. This is a slight adjustment to the usual schedule.

  • Swing lesson: 8:30pm, included with the dance
  • Dancing: 9:15pm-12:00am
  • Special performances with Katie’s Riff Academy and Hop to the Beat
  • Shim Sham, Frankie Style!
  • Big Apple, the Frankie version of course!
  • Proceeds go to the Beantown Scholarship Program

Admission: $12 ($8 with Student ID)

Brennen Ernst & The Roaming Tones

Brennen Ernst & The Roaming Tones
Brennen Ernst

Brennen Ernst & The Roaming Tones are a Jazz band based in Philadelphia, PA, playing music from the ’30s and ’40s with a supremely danceable rhythm. Bandleader Brennen Ernst, originally inspired by swing guitar luminaries such as Django Reinhardt and Charlie Christian, has been gaining recognition as one of the hardest swinging guitarists on the scene today. He was the guitarist in Solomon Douglas’ band for the last 2 years when they played at Uptown Swing. With Solomon off working for an Australian cruise line, we are looking forward to having Brennen back with his own band to play for us this year!

KI has given us permission to use their beautiful venue for our dance during Passover week with the stipulation that absolutely no food or drinks be brought into the building. The only exception is bottled water. We will not be able to provide snacks this month or a jug for water. The only drinks for sale will be bottled water. It is permissible to bring your own bottled water. (NOT tap water in a personal water bottle!) It’s important that we respect KI’s restrictions and very much appreciate everyone’s cooperation so that we may have our dance this month. Thanks!

There is a small change to the usual dance schedule for April. The lesson will start at 8:30pm and dancing at 9:10pm.

Guest DJ this month is Stan Yen.

Admission: $18 ($14 with Student ID)

Uptown Swing is excited to welcome back Shawn Hershey, Josh Fialkoff & The Fried Bananas to our March dance! Together they carefully crafted the Bananas’ sound, drawing inspiration from Jazz greats like Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet, and Dr. Michael White. Since then, this versatile band has evolved to incorporate other swing influences from New Orleans to New York City, from the ’20s to the ’40s. So whether you’re looking to swing out or boogie back, The Fried Bananas has your back, and your dancing shoes. We had a lot of fun last year at Uptown Swing and are looking forward to having them in Boston once again!

Racky loves playing for dancers and is great at keeping a Swing groove to everything played. There is plenty of inspiration for swinging out! His delivery has always been “soulful” and for this dance he’ll be reaching into his bag of tricks to add some classic Soul selections. Racky connects with his audience and his energy is infectious. Beantown Swing Orchestra

The 18-piece Beantown Swing Orchestra specializes in performing big band dance charts from the Swing Era, all transcribed from the original vintage recordings by trumpeter Danny Fratina. Some of their favorite arrangers include Fletcher Henderson and Sy Oliver, whose work was performed by Benny Goodman, Tommy Dorsey, and Jimmie Lunceford. With most of its musicians in their twenties, Beantown Swing Orchestra is a true representation of the young and energetic big bands of the 1930s.

Taryn Newborne and The Real Deal

Born in Memphis and raised in Atlanta, vocalist Taryn Newborne is rooted deeply in the soil of a rich musical heritage. She has often said that she loves music so much, it hurts her feelings. After years of dancing in her local Lindy Hop scene, one of the major organizers suggested that Taryn put her own group together for dances. Taryn Newborne and The Real Deal was born. She’d finally found her home, situated between her love of singing and Lindy Hop. Since becoming a regular in her home scene, Taryn has had the opportunity to make guest appearances with Falty and the Defects, Ben Polcer, Jonathan Stout and Gordon Webster.

Comprised of some of the most sought after musicians in the world, Taryn Newborne and the Real Deal strive to swing as hard as possible.

Guest DJ this month is Stan Yen.
