Uptown Swing Dance Fall Schedule - New Location

Uptown Swing Dance

Big news for Uptown Swing! We are moving to a beautiful ballroom owned by Congregation Kehillath Israel (KI) in Brookline starting this September. It is a wonderful space with a very large wood floor, AC and conveniently located just a few blocks from Coolidge Corner on Harvard St. On street parking is available as well as several town lots nearby. Public transportation is very accessible with 2 nearby T stations and a bus that stops out front.

Please bare with us as our schedule will be a bit erratic for the fall. Also note that our October dance will be at a different venue in Cambridge. Starting in January we will be back to our usual slot with most dances on the 3rd Saturday of the month at our new home at KI.

Uptown Swing is friendly and fun with a live band each month. A lesson is included which starts at 8:15pm and the dance at 9:00pm. All levels are welcome and no partners are needed.

  • September 15: Solomon Douglas Quintet featuring Alison Dreyfuss
  • October 13: Boston Swing Express (special location)
  • November 3: Racky Thomas Band
  • December 1: Gordon Webster Band featuring Naomi Uyama

BSDN New Dance Season

Doc Scanlon

This year the Boston Swing Dance Network is coming up to 26 years of bringing live music to the Boston Swing dance community! This dance was created when a Swing community was just getting started and we have Roger Weiss to thank for keeping it going all these years. The first dance is on Saturday, September 8 with Doc Scanlon at a new location just around the corner. An excellent way to kick off a new season of dance!

ILHC This Weekend

ILHCThis weekend we are off to ILHC, the International Lindy Hop Championships. This will be the 5th year for this awesome event as well as our 5th year as Competition Coordinators. We’ll be busy as it will be a full schedule of competitions and many competitors. ILHC has moved to a new, bigger hotel this year which we have heard is fabulous. It is a truly international event with competitors coming from all over the world. The atmosphere is friendly, positive, inspiring and uplifting. Even though we’ll be working, we love being part of this fabulous event!

New Class Session Starts September

Swing Dance Class

September marks a new season of dancing and a great time to get back into class after the summer break. It is also an excellent time for those just getting started. We are always striving to bring new people into the dance community and classes are a great first step. Most of our new students come from recommendations and we really appreciate all of your help to keep our community growing and thriving!

Our new class session starts Sunday nights on September 9 in Newton Lower Falls and Monday nights on September 10 at Ruggles Church  in Boston (near Fenway Park). There are classes for all levels, no partners required.

Here’s what’s up for the next 6 week session:

  • Beginner Swing/Intro to Lindy Hop Level 1: For those who are brand new to Swing dancing, this is the place to start! Also ideal for those with some experience who would like to brush up on skills and build a repertoire of fun moves. Six count basics will be covered along with a different selection of steps each session providing a foundation of the basic elements of Lindy Hop such as rhythm, style and partner connection. There are 7 different sessions at this level building a good base for social dancing. Level 1 classes may be taken in any order. It is recommended that students stay at this level long enough to feel very comfortable with the material taught before moving to Level 2. Discount after 2 sessions. No experience or partner required. This class meets in both Newton and Boston.
  • Lindy Hop Level 2: Level 2 focuses on the core fundamentals of Lindy Hop, including a mix of 8 and 6 count basics. Emphasis is on technique, partner connection, musicality and building skills. No previous Lindy Hop experience required, although must competently social dance any style of triple-step Swing. There are 8 different sessions at this level which continually change over time and can be taken in any order. Each session includes a range of classic Charleston to newer variations, all with a touch of flash! Discount after 2 sessions. No partner required. This class meets in both Newton and Boston.
  • Interesting, Fun and Fancy Turns: This new class features a variety of moves from open and from closed which include the element of turning for follows, leads and sometimes both. We’ll be moving in and out, twisting and turning and passing while working on connecting with flow, stretch and momentum. (All that good stuff!) For experienced Lindy Hop dancers with solid basics, no partner required. This class meets on Sundays in Newton.

Charles River Community BoatingOne of our favorite things about summer is the opportunity for some outdoor dancing! This Saturday the place to be is in Boston at Community Boating. Boston Swing Central will be hosting a dance and here’s the information:

Swingin’ on the Charles is back! This is what Summer is all about! Dancing outside at sunset, on the banks of the River Charles. This is one of the most magical nights of dancing that we have all year. It just doesn’t get any better than this. A summer classic and definitely a dance you’ll be thinking about next Winter when you’re driving down Storrow on a grey day.

Community Boating has new docks, they’re smooth, level and have more square footage. So if you’ve danced there in the past, you’ll now get to enjoy significantly better dancing conditions.
